SUPERVISION
FOR SPIRITUAL DIRECTORS
Anyone who is exercising
the ministry of Spiritual Direction should consider the support
afforded by supervision. This is a valuable resource for people
who regularly engage with another person in a professional one to
one relationship.
The scope of supervision
is wide. It covers awareness of God in one's ministry, growth in
insight and professionalism (good practice) and offers a `safe
space' to explore feelings while receiving encouragement and
support.
Sometimes the issues
that come up in spiritual direction can be very complex, confusing
or difficult to disentangle. It might be that the relationship
between director and directee has become troubled, for whatever
reason, or perhaps the director feels the directee is stuck in a
given situation. Supervision offers the opportunity for the
director to step back and reflect with another professionally
trained and trusted person in an environment of complete
anonymity. It is an attentive and supportive climate which
should ideally allow the director to explore new options and ways to
approach the difficulty that has arisen.
The Revd John-Francis
Friendship
and Revd Colin Travers jointly
coordinate supervision in this area and either will be happy to
answer any queries. They can be contacted by email:
